Jets split a pair of weekend games remain one point out of first
It was a busy weekend for the Strathroy Jets with two games and two points out of a possible four points earned. On Friday at home, they outlasted the Six Nations Ironmen 7-5 in a game that was pretty testy throughout. Both teams combined for 23 minor penalties and 46 minutes in penalties mainly composed of some post whistle extra curricular activities.
The game itself scoring wise was pretty tight at least for the first 26 minutes of game time as Six Nations held a 1-0 lead until the 6:25 mark of the second period when Mitch Fitzmorris scored his first of three to tie the hockey game at one. After that, the teams combined for 11 goals in 34 minutes leading to a 7-5 final, including seven goals alone in the final frame. Strathroy had two powerplay goals compared to four for the Ironmen.
As mentioned, Fitzmorris led the way for the Jets with a hat trick and Kole Keating added a goal and two helpers. Theoren Hill had a hat trick and an assist for Six Nations.
The following night, a rematch of a week prior as the Jets travelled to Alvinston to take on the Killer Bees with first place on the line. It wasn't as intense penalty wise as Strathroy's Friday night game but the game was highlighted by a good tilt between Strathroy's Brand Prust and Alvinston's Kraig Wright. Strathroy was in catch up mode all night as Alvinston held 4 different leads in the game outshooting the Jets 32-28 in the game including 11-4 alone in the third period.
Alvinston's big guns went to work as Brennan Feasey, James McEwen, Ethan Lamoreaux and the game's third star Kraig Wright each had two points. Tucker Firth was the lone Jet with a multi point game as he earned a goal and assist.
So with two weeks left in the regular season, Strathroy has one game left in the regular season on the road in Orangeville in early February. The Jets have clinched 2nd in the conference and at least second in the South Division. The Jets currently sit one point back of Alvinston for first but the Killer Bees have two games left versus division opponents Tilbury and Stratford. It's likely Strathroy will finish 2nd in the division and conference.
Strathroy will travel to Orangeville February 6th for an 8pm start.
